If you don't all ready know, I am very anti-tanning, ESPECIALLY when it comes to tanning beds. After having an Uncle pass away from melanoma and my Dad have a large portion of his face removed because of skin cancer, I want nothing more than for people to be smart when it comes to protecting their skin & this is why I am an avid proponent of self tanners!
I have tried many different self tanner products & have gotten countless spray tans and through all of those experiences... some being a LOT worse than others, I wanted to share my knowledge with you all and give you some of my tips & tricks on how to make sure you get that HEALTHY glow without the harmful effects of UV rays & without making you look like an umpa lupma got in a fight with a zebra (yes, this has happened to me before haha).
Whether you are getting a spray tan or applying self tanner, I highly recommend that you use utilize these tips before hand.
1. Product is everything. There are a tonnnn of self tanners out on the market and almost all of them will claim to be "streak free," but I can also tell you that almost all of those claims are 150% false! I have tried lots of self tanners, but the only one I can honestly say I have found to be "streak free" is Rosa Self Tanner. You can order Rosa online here rst1.mybigcommerce.com/ (plus if you want a discount- and who doesn't- use the code JACLYNRST). Now I am not just throwing a product at you all. I honest to goodness have found Rosa Self Tanner to be the best on the market, plus the fact that it has no weird self tanner smell (I know you know what I'm talking about) & doesn't sweat onto my clothes during my workouts is HUGE for me... So I mean it when I say that "product is EVERYTHING when it comes to self tanners."
2. When doing my own self tanner I always have these things handy:
4. Spot check. One you get the product spot check it by rubbing a small amount of the product on some where that is typically hidden on an average day (ex: stomach or upper thigh) to see how the product reacts with your skin & how well it's going to work for you.
If I could give you one piece of advice it would be DO NOT get a spray tan from a machine. A machine cannot properly give you the coverage and color that you need to match your body. Instead, find a place that has qualified people who give sprays. Now, I know that sometimes even these places can be iffy, but I promise that a bad spray tan by a person, would still be better than any spray tan from a machine.
Reach out to people in your community & see where they go for spray tans (ask on Facebook or use Yelp!). People will give you their honest opinion (& all of their umpa lumpa zebra horror stories)... For my Richmond, VA peeps, Bombshell is my go to & for anyone in the Roanoke, VA, Blown Away is great too!
Also, be sure that you don't have any where special to go right after you get a spray tan because you need to let those sit for 4-6 hours (aka no gym, no getting sweaty, no showers). I always wear sweat pants, a large t-shirt, and flip flops when I'm going to get a spray tan (lose the bra too, you don't want bra lines). Most spray tans have a slight smell and they will rub off onto your clothes while drying and you don't want this on your nice clothes.
Follow these do's & don'ts & you'll be looking like a bronzed goodess (or god, for my boys) all the while keeping your skin safe & healthy.
