I know for a lot of people, especially women, I have spoken with about fitness chose not to try new things, especially when it comes to weight training, because of an intimidation factor on the weight room floor, also known as gymtimidation. But, as a female who lifts daily, I’m telling you to GET PAST THIS!
I understand that for anyone trying to get back into a gym routine, or starting one for the first time, you need to get comfortable with your exercises. However, don’t confused finding your comfort level with being scared to push yourself and try new things just because you are intimidated by other people in the gym or what they may think! Seriously, I know we get it wrapped in our heads that people may be watching or “judging” us, but, 9 out of 10 times, they aren’t!
Everyone is in the gym trying to push themselves to meet new goals. Meaning the gym should be a supportive environment, filled with people who want to see others succeed. So who cares if you’ve never tried a specific exercise or never even lifted a barbell before, get in there and try it out! I promise you that the only person who actually cares about what you’re doing is YOU. Everyone else is focused on their own workouts, and isn’t at all worried about what you are doing (& if for whatever crazy reason they are, then that is their problem, NOT yours).
Also, do NOT be scared to ask for help!
When it comes to learning new exercises you always want to ensure that you’re performing the movement with proper form, in order to prevent any kind of injury from occurring. One of the best ways to prevent this is by asking someone for help! Every gym you go to should have a trainer standing by that will be more than willing to teach you proper form on an exercise. Don’t be scared to ask them!
Or, if you see someone doing an exercise you haven’t seen before or have wanted to try it out, ask them about it! Like I said before, everyone is in the gym to succeed, so there is no reason everyone should be anything but nice to others in that environment. Yes everyone has their headphones in and is zoned out, but most people are going to be more than willing to be quickly interrupted in order help someone who asks them, so stop being “gymtimidated” and just ask them!
Your fitness journey should be yours and yours alone. Stop caring about what other people might think about you. You want to lift heavy weights? Pick them up! You want to wear spandex shorts? Rock those shorts. You want to take a gym selfie? Flex those muscles!
Be PROUD of who you are, every new goal you set to achieve, and the process you’ve been on to get to meet those milestones… no one else matters in these situations but YOU! Lose this “gymtimidation” mentality (seriously, 99% of the time people aren’t even paying attention to you in the slightest, it’s all a mental game we’ve built in our own heads). Focus on your goals, get yourself on that weight floor and put in work, because you are awesome and can do ANYTHING that you put your mind to!
Be Happy. Be Healthy. Be a Fighter.
